Oslob: Beyond Sumilon and the whale shark frenzy

Remnants of the Baluarte at the town of Oslob.

I haven't been to Oslob, a fourth class municipality in the southern part of Cebu province. But I probably know Oslob because of Sumilon Island and regrettably, the whale shark feeding in Tan-awan, of which I'm totally against. Little did I know that the town also has a few historical places of interest, thanks to My Bibe's Instagram photos from her Southern Cebu trip some 2 months ago. And might I say they made me want to check this town out myself.

Much like the hilly and rolling landscape of Boljoon, Oslob is also very much a coastal town. Its seaside plaza looks beautiful, so to speak, especially since where others are facing a mostly grayish body of water, Oslob offers a sea that's painted in varying hues of blue.

Imagine if Manila Bay were like this. Unfortunately we can only imagine.

As with the rest of Cebu, this town also has an old church, which was originally built in the 1800s. It was burned during World War II but was restored in 1955. There are also remnants of a baluarte, or watchtower, along the coastline that was built during Spanish colonial times to deter the Moro raiders.

Also standing near the church is an unfinished building, also from the 1800s, made of coral stone called Cuartel. It was reportedly built to serve as barracks for the Spanish guardia civil.

The Spaniards have left quite an influence here. And of course elsewhere in the country.

Hope to visit you soon, Oslob.
