[Ramblings] Midweek news roundup

Crazy news so far this week. We've got everything from a president wanting reports of good news and then getting them, to the irony of a particular Earth Day run.

On Hacienda Luisita
  • The Supreme Court voted 14-0 on the Hacienda Luisita case. Finally, there's good news! The President is probably going nuts right now, chain-smoking, thinking it would calm him when all it does is accelerate his heart rate.

  • The high court also voted 8-6 to peg the 'just compensation' at the 1989 price of Php 40,000 per hectare. Now here's where the SC judges disagreed, just in case you thought The President's cohorts in the SC are being impartial. So let's just wait for Leila De Lima to defy this Supreme Court decision. I wouldn't be surprised.
  • The Php40-K/hectare price means that the Cojuangcos will be receiving much, much less than the Php5 or 10 billion they were asking for. The President better hide now; Uncle Danding will be very, very angry.
  • Curiously, the Palace has kept mum on the issue so far. Probably because the President wants his 'mum' right now to cuddle up to?
  • With this landmark decision, expect a new round of tirades and dirty tactics from the Palace against Chief Justice Renato Corona. I hope he gets acquitted. The President would totally go bonkers then.

On the President lambasting the media
  • On Monday the President criticized the media for unfair reporting. He clamored for reporting of good news. Well Mr President, you got what you wanted -- the SC decision on Hacienda Luisita is all over the headlines!
  • The President also criticized the media for saying he went out on a date in February when he was in an economic planning meeting or something, that they didn't even bother to check the veracity of the source - a tweet from actor Edu Manzano. Get over it! That was February; April's almost over!
  • He also said that the foreign media seem to care more about the Philippines than the local media does. Common, they don't. They probably even don't know where the Philippines is!

On the Scarborough Shoal standoff with China
  • Both China and the Philippines each had its own history to tell about who owns Scarborough Shoal. It is Huangyan Island to China and Panatag Shoal or Bajo de Masinloc to the Philippines. Then who called it Scarborough? Are both countries sure they're referring to the same bunch of rocks?
  • On the other hand, Filipino netizens argued by using common sense:

'Nga naman!
  • Then both parties took the war to cyberspace with Chinese hackers defacing the University of the Philippines' website, Filipinos counter-attacking websites of several Chinese universities, then Chinese attacking Palace websites... You know what? It's better than them bombing and decimating us - literally.

On that infamous Earth Day run photo
  • In an Earth Day run organized by NatGeo, dozens of used paper cups were casually thrown by runners in the gutter. Made of recyclable material naman daw 'yung paper cups.
  • Unbeknownst to me, this apparently is a common practice in fun runs, ditching used paper or plastic cups near water stations, and that someone else is cleaning right after. But who?
  • Running does nothing to save Mother Earth. Running only causes people to inhale more oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide, thereby aggravating global warming. Pak!

Now let's get to work.
