DINING | Felix Restaurant: A little inconsistent but overall still good
Inside Felix Restaurant at Greenbelt 5.
Felix Restaurant is a casual dining restaurant at Greenbelt 5 in Makati City. Been here a few times and here's a roundup of my experiences so far.
Interiors and ambiance
Four plain, circular chandeliers hang from the restaurant's high ceiling, providing warm, ambient light to the space. The walls are painted white, with some dark brown accents. This color scheme seamlessly extends throughout the cushioned wooden chairs and marble-top tables, interrupted only by the bright blue couch-style seating lining up its walls. Nice touch actually.
It's a very open space, with enough room between tables, so it doesn't feel crowded. And as with probably all restaurants along this strip of Greenbelt, al fresco dining is also available.
I'm digging the simple chandeliers.
Nice droplight combo.
I could say that Felix is a pretty nice restaurant; casual enough and not too fancy. It's not the most romantic for a date because it's too "open" but it nevertheless has a pleasant vibe.
The food
The food is a bit of a hit-and-miss for me. It's a bit pricey but is not extremely so. Of course this is relative but it's in line with other dining spots of its kind in the city.
I enjoyed their pumpkin, carrot and chestnut soup. It was flavorful and with just the right thickness. The sautéed baby squid with house-made chorizo was also good, which came with toasted bread. The squid was tender and well-seasoned.
I also tried one of their entrées, grilled pompano in mango watermelon salsa, served with arugula pesto pasta. The fish was tender and not dry, with nothing overpowering its flavor--just pure grilled goodness. Yes, I like that I could still taste the fish. The salsa, on the other hand, provided a nice break for your taste buds.
Pumpkin, carrot, and chestnut soup (Php 200).
Sautéed baby squid with house-made chorizo (Php 335).
Grilled pompano in mango watermelon salsa, served with arugula pesto pasta (Php 595).
To our dismay, both dishes were shockingly oily. My few pieces of ravioli, for instance, were literally swimming in grease. The oil overwhelmed everything, and we certainly did not enjoy the food at all.
Sautéed angulas pasta (Php 550).
Pear and apple parmesan ravioli (Php 450).
Look at all that oil!
Tiramisu (Php 235).
We tried dessert once and ended up with tiramisu after our original choices were not available. It was just okay although I'm personally not a big fan of tiramisu to begin with. So it could just be me.
Service
Service was a little inconsistent. Waiters could sometimes be snappy and then totally inattentive the next instance. I hate it when I'm waving like crazy and nobody seems to notice you. It would be completely rude if I yelled from across the room, now wouldn't it?
Meanwhile, waiting time for your food is just about alright, around 15 to 20 minutes.
Nice touch with the diner-style seating and the faux windows.
In hindsight
All things considered, Felix Restaurant is still a fairly good place to dine. Yes, it's a bit expensive but I've had more good experiences with their food than unpleasant ones. I just hope they can be more consistent in the quality of their dishes and staff service. Still worth a try in my opinion.
Felix Restaurant is at the Ground Floor of the garden-facing restaurant strip of Greenbelt 5 near the chapel.
