FRAGRANCE | The Decay of the Angel EDP by Timothy Han Edition Perfumes: Evocative name but far from repulsive scent

What a way to name a fragrance, I thought. The Decay of the Angel is the second of two bottles of Timothy Han Edition Perfumes we got a couple of months ago, the other one being Against Nature. Timothy Han fragrances are inspired by literary works and have this standard presentation consisting of a simple, horizontally wide, circular bottle encased in a white lift-top box, with an accompanying postcard of the frag's featured artwork.

When I first sprayed it, I was instantly reminded of Breath of God by Lush. It's not an exact copy but the general vibe is similar, at least initially. The opening is smoky, with a citrus top that counteracts the former's inherent darkness. After a few minutes, the smoke begins to part, partially revealing a nondescript white floral. There's still a thin veil of citrus and smoke obscuring it a bit, so it's not as defined a floral note. It does, however, show a semi-creamy side as the citrus starts to fade but then holds back quite abruptly.

The smokiness returns after a short while with a sort of soapy character in tow. While the overall scent profile still leans a bit on the fresher side, the smokiness renders the soapiness "dirty" as opposed to what usually is a clean feel when this type of accord is introduced. As Decay develops further, I get a certain dustiness around the edges along with a burnt smell. These two aren't dominant notes, though, and are more like accents that are only identifiable up close. For comparison, the dustiness is far from what I get from Tom Ford Lavender Extrême while the burnt smell is not as strong as that in Francesca Bianchi's The Lover's Tale. Eventually, everything relaxes into a smoky floral suffused with a tinge of muskiness.

However uncanny the name sounds, The Decay of the Angel is hardly shocking in how it smells—far from it actually; no rotting flesh whatsoever. Yes, it's a little unconventional but I don't think it's outright polarizing. With everything tempered, it's not bound to offend many. It projects this air of mystery and haunting beauty, moderately for the first two hours or so before gradually declining in strength. Longevity's fairly good, too. I find it perfectly unisex and versatile weather-wise. All in all, this is a pretty solid frag that's worth trying.
