(Little) Man of Style: Alonso Mateo
I haven't featured a style icon for almost a year now but after stumbling upon this little fella on the web yesterday, I was so inspired to do one again. Yes, I'm talking about a kid and I'm pretty sure you'll agree with me in declaring him a man of style.
Introducing: five-year old Alonso Mateo...
Alonso Mateo Valdes Espinosa is probably the most fashionable five-year old on the planet today. And with this young stud's flair for fashion coupled with really good looks, he's fast becoming a social media superstar. He doesn't have his own account just yet, though; it's from his mom's Instagram account (@luisafere) where he charms the lights out of everyone.
Originally from Mexico, Alonso Mateo and his family have since moved to Laguna Beach, California. His mom's a freelance stylist, which should explain his impeccably styled outfits. But it isn't always her choice, I've read somewhere, because the kid himself has a lot of say in his clothing choices as he slowly comes into his own, sartorially speaking. Sometimes, mom is merely an adviser to guide him in his choices. His dad, on the other hand, manages a private equity firm. So I think it's safe to say this family is really well off.
Regardless of who picks his outfits, the kid just completely owns every single ensemble he wears. He exudes confidence many men thrice, four or five times his age have absolutely none of. He knows how to work the camera and even pose like a model. In short, the kid's got swag!
Now let's see what style pointers us much older gentlemen can get from this little guy. For one, his clothes are perfectly tailored. Look at his suits, they're never slouchy. And his pants, they're of the right length and fit. What this kid is telling us is that fit is indeed everything.
The kid looks effortless in this suit but no tie combo. Pay attention to how his suit and pants fit him perfectly.
Most kid's clothes I find in stores are all baggy and slouchy, so I'm really impressed to see slim-fitting pieces on this little guy. Well apparently, mom takes him to the tailor. As GQ has been evangelizing, find a good tailor; even off-the-rack designer pieces need some bit of tweaking to fit you perfectly.
By taking him to appointments with a tailor, mom is imparting some serious sartorial wisdom to his son.
Alonso Mateo also shows us effortless layering. And even when he has a coat on top of a cardigan that's on top of a shirt, or a quilted vest over a plaid jacket that's on top of two t-shirts, he never looks puffy or lousy. Again, it's all about the fit.
Quilts can be a bit too puffy, but with the right size and proportions, you'll look like a total badass. Those boots help, too.
Pants should fall just right atop your shoes. If they slouch and bunch up at the hemline, then they're too long.
This diminutive style guy also shows us some lessons on wearing knits without looking like Christmas or several pounds heavier, and how classy sunglasses amp up the swag factor.
Not sure how to pull off a turtleneck--and a ribbed knit at that? Take a cue from this guy. And again, fit is everything.
Even in winter, even in drop-crotch pants, even with a winter hat on, yes, you can still look sharp.
With all the lessons available about fit, about proportions, patterns, and whatnot, they're all nothing if you don't own it. Your unease and lack of confidence can ruin an otherwise perfect outfit. Put on some swag, like this kid always does.
Alonso Mateo shows us he's got what it takes to go with the pros. The guy he's with is a professional model.
Dressing according to the season, little style guy imparts a few lessons on wearing shorts as well. In addition to fit, pay attention to length. Above the knee should be perfect.
A few more tips from our little pro...
With checkered pants, it's best to keep the top plain and simple. This will allow you enough room for something else that's loud, like these red sunnies.
Alonso Mateo still has a lot of years ahead of him, and I'm excited to see how this kid turns out in the future given that he's already so stylish at five. There will be haters--in fact, there are already--but whatever, the kid looks like he's enjoying every bit of it. Just let him be.
You can check out more of Alonso Mateo's photos from his mom's Instagram account (@luisafere). He also has a Facebook fan page already if you're interested.

How to take a selfie. Hehe...a little vainglory doesn't hurt, I guess.
