FRAGRANCE | Understated patchouli elegance in Ulrich Lang New York's Nightscape EDT

halfwhiteboy - Nightscape EDT by Ulrich Lang New York

As with all Ulrich Lang New York's offerings thus far, Nightscape comes in a clean, no-frills bottle that's classy in its simplicity. The juice is a very light yellow that, if I may, belies its name. But apparently dark does not necessarily equate to nighttime.

Patchouli dominates from the start, its opening salvo characteristically earthy and with just enough of a squeeze of citrus to brighten it up. It's not a dirty type of patchouli but it's not strong either, a bit muted, so it's quite pleasant and safe for office wear. In my experience, Diptyque's Tempo offers way more grit than this but even that one I gleefully wear to work.

There's a surrounding green accord, bringing along a certain cool, slightly camphorous vibe with it. It's there playing support to the patch, enriching the scent but never taking away the spotlight from the main star. I also get a hint of florals peering through but it leaves too soon.

Nightscape then eases into woody and leathery territory, albeit soft. At this point the patch is tinged with drops of sweetness--only drops, allowing the earthiness of the patchouli to still shine before it fades away, leaving a nice, comforting skin scent.

On the downside, this fragrance isn't the best of performers, with moderate projection in its first hour, maxing at two or three, and weakens thereafter. On my skin it also doesn't last very long (a skin scent in about 4 or 5 hours), but nothing that an extra spritz or two could remedy. However, it sticks to your clothes and I love it.

In hindsight, Nightscape by Ulrich Lang New York is a beautiful, classy patchouli-based fragrance. It's not overly sweetened but it's subdued enough to be safe for close counters. Although I wish it projected better and lasted longer, I still like it as a scent. Besides, it's not very expensive, so I think it's worth a try.
