FRAGRANCE | Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men EDT: A forgotten 80s gem that deserves some attention

halfwhiteboy - Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men EDT

Clearly I missed a lot from the 80s, like this fragrance I've never even heard of before, let alone the brand. But I'm catching up, however slowly. That decade had such a reputation after all.

I was probably expecting a roaring, charging beast when I first sprayed it but instead Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men came greeting me with blinking eyes and a smile. Yes, the opening can be strong but it doesn't attack you. I don't know if reformulations have weakened this juice but I actually find this current iteration pleasant. Still strong but pleasant.

A heady, citrusy rose leads the opening. I remember another such combination in French Leather by Memo Paris, but that one I find rather shrill. This one is smoother and more agreeable to my nose. Unfortunately it leaves the party too soon and a bitter, green note appears in its stead.

Slowly, a sweetened earthy accord rises, a honeyed patchouli and moss, becoming rounder by the minute and underscored by a lovely, powdery nuance (likely from the cinnamon and orris). In as much as I love "dirty" patchouli, like in Diptyque Tempo, I'm also a sucker for the sweetened or glossed over kind. So I'm really enjoying Giorgio, more so because this stage is quite prolonged.

I'll place projection between moderate to strong for a good three hours or so as it surrounds the wearer with a beautiful scent cloud. It then settles closer to the skin with a mild, woody and musky base for the next few hours, interjected by wafts of that familiar powdery and earthy goodness.

I know some may feel that this fragrance is dated. Maybe it isn't the most contemporary-smelling, nor does it sport the most contemporary-looking presentation, but Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men is a beautiful blend that deserves some attention. And with prices really low, how could you not give this 80s boy a shot?
