FRAGRANCE | Tom Ford Ombré Leather EDP: A lighter and more wearable leather fragrance

halfwhiteboy - Tom Ford Ombré Leather EDP

My first encounter with Tom Ford Ombré Leather was at a department store when it first came out sometime last year (2018). Handsome-looking opaque bottle; simple but dignified. And elegant, I must add. I tried it and was instantly reminded of Tuscan Leather. Although still different, there seems to be an underlying vein connecting the two. After all, they're from the same house.

But with so much going on in my mind (and nose) at the time, I temporarily set it aside in favor of other purchases. Then when I was ready to buy it, it was out of stock. Yeah, right. Luckily I was able to score a bottle from a fellow fraghead recently.

Right off the bat Ombré Leather opens with, well, leather. It's dry, a little sharp, and laced with just a touch of sweetness around the edges. Unlike its Private Blend cousin, it doesn't have that distinguishable raspberry note in the opening. It's not as strong either but is by no means a weakling with its moderate projection and considerable longevity.

It's not a complex fragrance but I'm digging its simplicity. It says it's a leather fragrance and that's basically what you get, although the leather understandably softens further into the drydown, revealing a little more of the sweetness and of something that's faintly earthy. It may not be unique but it's a nice scent nonetheless, something a bit formal but very wearable.

I think Tom Ford managed to come up with something along the lines of Tuscan Leather but one that's potentially appealing to more people, not to mention more affordable. So if you find his Private Blend line rather prohibitive in terms of price, then Ombré Leather is your next best bet. However, despite its wearability, leather may still not be everyone's cup of tea, so try first before you buy.
