FRAGRANCE | Eau de Campagne EDT by Sisley: An underrated, almost forgotten explosion of green
I'm not hearing much about Sisley in the fragrance community, which is probably why it's a counter I often overlook in one of our local department stores - until one fine day when we ventured outside the perimeter of familiar fragrance counters. Pardon me for my ignorance but hey, they have fragrances after all! We tested a few and one of the bottles we ended up with is Eau de Campagne.
This is an unapologetically green fragrance, with a very bitter, vegetal opening that I instantly connected with. Must be the tomato leaf, which alone signals that this fragrance ain't for everybody. A squeeze of lemon accompanies the opening, creating a fairly unusual fresh accord that's decidedly different from most freshies I know. No sweetness whatsoever here, and it's a welcome departure from the usual.
Unfortunately the tomato leaf only lasts for several minutes, 30 at most. What comes next is a lemony, mossy affair that's still very much green in character - and herbal. It's reminiscent of masculine colognes from decades past (Bijan Men, for instance), and I'm absolutely digging the classic vibe. It was created in 1974 after all, and purported to be Jean-Claude Ellena's first commercial release. No wonder I immediately gravitated towards the scent.
I don't know if reformulations have messed its performance up but projection is on the soft side, a little stronger only in its first hour. It also isn't very long-lasting, maybe 4 or 5 hours tops. Good thing I don't mind doing touch-ups throughout the day, which isn't very economical, though, as it doesn't come cheap. Nonetheless, Eau de Campagne is a nice addition to anyone's collection, particularly if you like green scents. It's an underrated fragrance in my opinion, seemingly forgotten in today's barrage of new releases. But it's definitely worth trying because in terms of scent profile, it stands apart from most of them.
