FRAGRANCE | Serge Lutens bottles up some baked sweet treats in Jeux de Peau EDP
Right upon spraying, Jeux de Peau by Serge Lutens greeted me with a sweet, milky wheat accord. It's kind of odd, yes, but wonderful to my nose, comforting even. Much like another Lutens release, Baptême du Feu, I'm really digging the strangeness here. This house sure does cook up some really interesting gourmands.
The sweetness is distinct, sugary with a tinge of sourness that provides a minimally sharp counterbalance, and it's quite addictive. I blind-bought this one after reading comments that say the scent reminds them of bread or of a bakery. The wheat is quite pronounced here, working perfectly with the milk, but I don't get bread, let alone freshly baked bread. It's a little too sweet for bread, but rather more like some baked sweet goodies. And who doesn't want sweet treats?
Jeux de Peau isn't a very strong fragrance but I don't mind. For me it's enough to provide you with a yummy scent cloud for at least two or three hours before the sweetness starts to weaken. Then sandalwood slowly takes over, blending with the milk and the sweetness, which now is almost vanillic as the sourness has dissipated. This resulting light creaminess and wood stays close to the skin, however. Moreover, it doesn't last that long and is barely detectable after maybe five hours. You'll have to respray to get you through the day.
Overall Jeux de Peau is an interestingly composed gourmand. There probably is no debate here that it's not to everyone's liking because it's a little strange. After all, not everyone would want to smell like some baked pastry. But personally I don't think it's as outré as it sounds and I really enjoy this scent. Yes, there's much left to be desired as to performance but it's worth sampling, especially for gourmand lovers.
