FRAGRANCE | Rive Gauche pour Homme EDT by YSL: Can't go wrong with a classic
As with the YSL classic M7, Rive Gauche pour Homme has also been discontinued and subsequently re-released by the house in those uniformly squarish bottles with the black cap. While I've been able to compare M7 with its re-release, M7 Oud Absolu, I haven't done the same with Rive Gauche. This review is for the original, the one in the slender tin can. Not exactly a fan of the choice of material but I love the metallic striped design. It looks so elegant despite aluminum's lack of inherent glamor.
The fragrance has a spiced-up citrus opening, with star anise amping up its bright and airy character. After it lifts off several minutes later, a clean and soapy lavender appears in its stead. The sharpness from the citrus leaves but its scent remains for a few more minutes.
There's an underlying warmth and sort of earthiness in the background, yet the scent remains light and clean. The soapiness is quite prolonged, eventually turning into something like detergent—but only up close. In the air it's still this beautiful fougere with that unmistakable barbershop vibe, especially when the lavender returns to the fore. I see some people comparing Tom Ford's Beau de Jour to this. Maybe it's just an association out of fondness because Rive Gauche was released during Ford's stint at YSL, but to my nose the two fragrances are quite different from each other. I get that there are similarities, more so since both are fougeres, but Beau de Jour has this pervading sharpness whereas Rive Gauche is rounder.
Within an hour, Rive Gauche becomes this slightly creamy fragrance with fresh florals, its soapiness still retained but now with an earthy nuance at the base. It reminds me of shaving cream in the best way possible. The scent can last you from morning till afternoon with a predominantly moderate projection. But even as it softens after 2 or 3 hours, you'll still catch whiffs of it throughout the day. It's a very wearable fragrance, not to mention versatile. I'm not sure how the new version stacks up but if you chance upon a bottle—or rather, a tin can—of this, just go get it. You can never go wrong with a classic.
