FRAGRANCE | Cabotine de Grès EDT by Parfums Grès: An inexpensive, fresh, floral delight

Tried on a women's fragrance for a change. Besides, fragrance hath no gender, right? But in terms of how we perceive scents and their association with gender, Cabotine de Grès is definitely feminine. The bottle design alone, more so its green floral stopper, clearly suggests that this one is for the ladies. But who cares?

The fragrance opens with a clean and fresh white floral mix, grounded by an unmistakable green facet in the background. It's unabashedly strong although it eventually settles into moderate territory. Nevertheless it's persistent in making its presence felt and it's one long-lasting fragrance, so to speak.

As the flowers continue to bloom, I get a certain soapiness after a few minutes, followed by a mild, fruity sweetness somewhere along the line. There's something vaguely animalic around the edges later on but it's deep-seated and doesn't last long. Whatever notes are weaving in and out of the picture cannot distract from what Cabotine de Grès is at its core—a predominantly white floral with an underlying green character.

Despite its relatively strong projection in general, the fragrance remains light and clean, a vibe shared by another green floral that I love, Creed Royal Mayfair, albeit with way more sophistication than this. But with no untoward sticky, creamy sweetness, Cabotine de Grès makes for a perfect choice for warm weather. It's also quite cheap, which all the more makes it a really good buy. It may be characteristically feminine but I guess the right guy can rock this with no problem at all.
