FRAGRANCE | YSL La Nuit de L'Homme EDT is clearly made for evenings
Much has been said about this already, let alone the spate of reformulations that followed its release in 2009. What I have is a fairly new 2018 bottle, which I can only assume is but a shadow of its former self, as what many lament.
YSL La Nuit de L'Homme EDT has a spicy-citrus opening; bright and pleasant. Given the name, I was expecting something dark but I simply don't get any. It's very far from other dark scents I know, like the handsome and brooding Black No.1 by House of Matriarch, or even the gloriously sweet and smoky oakmoss from Maxim's pour Homme.
Shortly after, lavender comes in and adds a dose of freshness into the mix, along with a very light creaminess that settles far in the background. At this point, the scent is only shaping up to be even farther from the night. It teeters on powdery, with a slightly sharp spiciness that only grows stronger after several more minutes. It's a little more restrained, however, and never gets as piercing as Valentino Uomo Intense, for instance.
But then as the sharpness grows and the fragrance's lightly sweetened, woody base is revealed, somehow I do see that it's something best suited for evening use, more so for cold nights and formal affairs. No, it's still not dark but it's a scent made for evenings. Nonetheless, daytime use is never prohibited, especially if it's nippy or if you're in a temperature-controlled environment.
La Nuit de L'Homme is a good fragrance. Unfortunately, current iterations suffer from less than desirable performance. It's not loud to begin with but then it also doesn't last, so resprays are mandatory to get you through the night. Or day.
