FRAGRANCE | Tom Ford Plum Japonais EDP: A sensual and mature kind of fruity
Putting up that Tom Ford Private Blend Christmas tree last December made me realize that I've amassed quite a number of bottles from the line. And with that I've also realized that I haven't really been using most of them, so I've started with Plum Japonais and gave it a full wearing.
True to its name, a sweet and juicy plum opens the show. Alongside it is a sweet and sour oud that I believe gives off this boozy vibe that I'm getting, which is wonderful. It reminds me a bit of how the booziness is in another Private Blend release: Tobacco Oud. Then a warm spiciness led by a very noticeable cinnamon enters after a few minutes. I love how the scent is building up, more so when a certain incense-like smokiness comes in.
As with many fruit-centric fragrances, it's so easy for Plum Japonais to fall into that juvenile, fruity-sweet trap. But the perfumer deftly steers the scent away from it—and in a seemingly simple way by spicing it up, adding a bit of booze (or at least something that evokes booze), and then smoking it. For me the smokiness elevates what could have been a childish frag to something sensual and mature.
As the drydown progresses, the sweetness eases, leaving behind a nicely spiced plum drenched in rum or brandy and surrounded by smoke. Further down the line, a light, ambery vanilla sweetness shyly emerges and joins the now low-humming ensemble. Plum Japonais isn't a loud scent to begin with. After showing off a bit for about 2 hours, it carries on with a rather soft projection. It lasts, though. Price point aside, it's well worth a try.
