FRAGRANCE | Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz EDT by Guerlain: Coconut made just a little lighter
Released in 2019, Coconut Fizz was yet another addition to Guerlain's already extensive roster of Aqua Allegoria fragrances. I was a bit surprised when this came out because I felt like coconut seemed out of place in a line known for light and fresh scents. When I think of coconut in fragrances—from Nishane's Fan Your Flames, to Francesca Bianchi's Sex and the Sea, and even to local brand ScentSmith Perfumery's Ilang Ilang Coconut—it's always warm and creamy. But then this one has "fizz" in its name.
Well, I don't necessarily get a sparkly vibe here but the coconut sure isn't heavy. There's a little citrus zing that comes with it, along with something watery, that together lend a light and fresh character to this tropical palm fruit. It's refreshing without being too citrusy or aquatic, and is very apt for summer wearing.
However, the citrus leaves too soon. In its stead, a soft floral accord slowly emerges, along with a growing sweetness. And just when I thought the coconut's treatment here is entirely different than most, it starts revealing its innate creaminess. I must concede, though, that it's still not as heavy and that it avoids being pigeonholed into that warm and creamy category. Somehow, it's still quasi-fresh.
The initial onslaught of Coconut Fizz can be anywhere between moderate and heavy, depending on how much you spray. Because Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria line isn't particularly known for its performance, I once did eight sprays, and the sweetness and the coconut almost became a little too much for me. But then its strength easily wanes after its first or second hour. And then when it's mostly soft and close to the skin several hours later, the coconut finally lets up, leaving behind a mostly sweet floral base. But don't dismiss it all just yet because your body's reaction to heat and humidity sends the coconut roaring back to life, which actually surprised me.
In hindsight, Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz offers an alternative coconut-centric fragrance that's a tad lighter and less creamy than the usual offerings. Never mind that it's not exactly fizzy as the name suggests. It's perfectly unisex, ideal for hot weather, and can be worn day or night, more so when you're on a tropical holiday. Performance is also a bit better than most in the line. I don't think it's a safe blind buy but for me it's worth trying.
