FRAGRANCE | Homegrown delights: White Drops EDP and Autumn Dew EDP by Whiff

halfwhiteboy - White Drops EDP and Autumn Dew EDP by Whiff

These two bottles been with us for quite some time now, and the recent return to warm and sunny days had me reach out for them. These EDPs, White Drops and Autumn Dew, are from homegrown Filipino brand Whiff Artisanal Perfumes. Their fragrances come in uniform bottles, which I like for their simple but sleek design. So how are these two in terms of scent? Here goes.

White Drops
This one has a lemony citrus opening with a mild sweetness, so it doesn't come across as sharp and sour at all. It's bright and the way the citrus is treated here reminds me a bit of another of Whiff's creations, Pine and Lime Pleasure. A few minutes in and a touch of floral surfaces. I don't know what specific flower it is but it strikes me as something white. It's far from being strong and works only to add depth to the citrus. There's also a hint of spicy sharpness but it's very faint and it largely remains in the background.

White Drops EDP: Drops of citrus freshness.

After about 30 minutes a deep-seated sharpness shyly appears, the kind of which I usually get from some blue or aquatic fragsWhite Drops starts with moderate projection but weakens easily after maybe an hour. By this time everything seems muted although I do catch occasional whiffs of it even after a couple of hours, particularly when it's hot. All in all it's nice and pleasant. You just have to make up for its lack of power by respraying every now and then. But for Php 595 for a 50ml bottle that you can share with the opposite sex, it's not bad.

Autumn Dew
The opening is a light, fruity sweet blend, followed almost immediately by a floral accord. At first it's indistinct but as the fruity scent fades—albeit leaving most of the sweetness behind—the florals slowly develop, with rose coming out on top. The rose is somewhere between being deep and rich and being light and fresh although the overall vibe remains on the lighter side. And because of the mild sweetness, it isn't dry like Perles de Lalique.

It's florals in autumn with Autumn Dew EDP.

Half an hour later a woody speck appears in the background but is easily lost in the mix. At this point the rose mellows a bit and settles into the blend although it remains the most prominent note, resting atop a very light and barely-there musk. Compared to White Drops, Autumn Dew fares better in terms of performance. However, resprays are still necessary to last you through the day.

The scent is a little skewed to the ladies's favor but to my nose this overall light and inoffensive release works for either sex. However, guys who want to try a rose frag but are iffy about its misplaced feminine connotation are probably better off with MFK's upcoming L'Homme À la Rose. But it's leaps and bounds more expensive, so you might want to reconsider experimenting with this cheapie instead.

In hindsight, both White Drops and Autumn Dew may not be the most complex and best-performing fragrances out there but for the price, you're still getting a good deal. Their generally light and mass-appealing formula is also perfect for a tropical climate like ours. And yeah, support local. 😊
